                                                              Zacchaeus

  • In church is it sometimes hard to see what is happening up front because someone tall is standing in front of you? Do you ask someone to lift you up?  Do you move over to the end of the row where you can see?

  • Have you ever gone to a parade?  Did you get to be on the front row where you could see the band and the floats?  Was there ever someone taller than you in front of you so you couldn’t see?  Maybe someone held you so you were taller?  Maybe you stood up on something to make you taller?

  • This is a story about a man who went to see Jesus as he came down the street and he was too short to see so he climbed a tree.  Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus so much, that he was willing to do something extra, like climb a tree, to see him.  He had never met Jesus but he had heard so many wonderful things about Jesus.  Here is the story from the Bible….    Luke19:1-10…”Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.”

  • Zacchaeus had never met Jesus, but Jesus knew his name.  Jesus knows each of our names too.  He knows where we are and what we are doing.   So, he called Zacchaeus by name and told him to come down out of the tree.

  • So let me ask you some questions….
